BiCMOS to the Latest RF Product Family Slide 7

In addition to addressing ASIC and COT, ST has standard products available in the mass market as well. A premier product is the STW81200. This is a wideband RF synthesizer, from slightly below 47 MHz to 6 GHz, which takes advantage of all of the features of the technologies previously discussed. The device covers this wide range by using three integrated VCOs and can be seen on this slide. The three integrated VCOs operate from 3 GHz up to 6 GHz, followed by a divider section that supports divisions of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, up to divide by 64 in order to provide the lower frequencies that it supports. For example, the 3 GHz frequency of the VCO, divided by 64, results in a frequency just below 47 MHz for the low end that this device supports, all the way up to direct, divide by 1, running the VCO at 6 GHz. The device has two outputs as well. These are differential outputs and can be direct, divide by 1, or one could be a divide by 2, 4, or etc., of the other output. The differential outputs can drive up to +7 dBm into 100 Ω. They can also be operated single-ended, it can drive approximately +3 dBm into 50 ohms. Another interesting feature of the device is integrated LDOs. The user does not have to provide separate, highly-filtered, dedicated power supply rails, but instead can supply one supply from 3.1 to 5.4 volts, using the integrated LDOs to supply the device with all of the necessary supplies that it needs internally. Doing this enables ST to achieve good phase noise performance, low noise and etc., because there is good control over the power supplies. The designer does not have to use the internal LDOs, they could use all external supplies. Each of these LDOs also have an output pin, which allows the designer to use the outputs of the LDOs to drive other low powered circuitry, such as an external LNA. The STW81200 is a 250-nanometer BiCMOS process, dual architecture integer-N or Fractional-N architecture, and is based on a 21-bit Sigma-Delta modulator, which provides high performance. It is fully programmable via a SPI bus. This device is available in a small 36 pin, 6X6 millimeter package.
