The increased resolution and display of finer signal detail provided by HD4096 High Definition technology enables the HDO oscilloscopes to make more precise waveform measurements than can be made with 8-bit instruments. As noted, measurements made with 8-bit oscilloscopes include quantization noise. The 12-bit HDO oscilloscopes, with 16 times more quantization levels, are able to more accurately characterize the waveform. As a result, measurement of the peak-to-peak voltage of the fourth oscillation of the waveform shown here yields very different results. The 8-bit oscilloscope measures the value as 165mV, while the 12-bit HDO oscilloscope provides a much more accurate result of 134mV.
