Shown here is another look at how HD4096 High Definition technology lets users of the HDO oscilloscopes see signals with more detail and clarity. On the left is a square wave with ripple captured with a 12-bit oscilloscope. The zoomed view clearly shows the ripple rising above the quantization noise. On the right is the same waveform captured with an 8-bit oscilloscope. In this case, the 8-bit ADCs do not have sufficient resolution to distinguish the ripple on the signal from the quantization noise. Thus, the details of the ripple, which is what the user is most interested in, are obscured.
