Bluetooth 4.2 standard adds new features that enable adoption of BLE in applications. There are three features that got added as a part of this version. A data length extension upgrades the application payload length to 251 bytes, thus increasing the throughput by around 3.5 times which enables much faster over the air firmware updates. Enhanced security with Bluetooth 4.2 has moved the address resolution functionality from a higher layer, mostly implemented in firmware, to the hardware layer. This optimizes the power during connection, as the resolution of private address happens autonomously in hardware, without involving higher layers. LE privacy gives the control to the user for managing his or her own tracking, which is a very critical requirement in medical and retail applications, to safeguard the sensitive user data. Also the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman stringent key generation and exchange algorithm for encryption is used. This enables BLE security in critical applications like home automation or banking cards, without worrying about being hacked. Cypress BLE solutions supports all of these features.
