ColdFire was specifically designed to address digital audio applications. As a result, the core includes an enhanced multiply-accumulate unit that specifically supports DSP audio functionality. This enables a ColdFire VoIP solution to handle all of the DSP functionality of voice processing as well as the network interface. When looking at most alternative processors, they typically lack the performance needed for the audio processing, so they need an external DSP which tends not to have enough control functionality to be able to interface to the network. While most of the solutions in the market tend to need both a DSP and a host processor, ColdFire offers the DSP performance and control functionality required for most applications in one device, thus eliminating the need for both a DSP and host processor.
