One example for residential use would be a security system. For instance, if an alarm is triggered, the resident would have to find a telephone, find the right phone number, and call into the monitoring center to let them know what is happening. By using VoIP, the resident could actually talk to the monitoring center directly through the alarm control unit without having to look for a phone number. Similarly, with a child monitor, a parent would have to have a particular receiver to listen to the child monitor. However, using VoIP, the signal could be routed anywhere - telephone, computer, or other system.
