Industrial DC/DC converters are typically designed for convection cooling and to operate over a wide, uncontrolled ambient temperature range, typically -40°C to 85°C. Industrial DC/DC converters are usually encapsulated, and come in standard DIP, SIP, 1" x 1", 1" x 2", 1.6" x 2", 2" x 2", and 2" x 3” packages. These characteristics are best appreciated when contrasted with similar characteristics for brick converters, more commonly used in IT applications. These products are typically designed for cooling with active airflow (100-400lfm); to operate over a narrower controlled environment temperature range of -5°C to 55°C; with open-frame construction; and come in standard 1/16th, 1/8th, ¼, ½, and full brick packages. There are some exceptions to this. For instance, there are some open-frame industrial products and encapsulated bricks. In addition, brick converters do find their way into industrial products and, conversely, industrial converters find their way into IT equipment among many other markets.
