Embedded Systems Troubleshooting with Oscilloscopes Slide 6

Looking at the waveform on this slide, it can be seen that the ID is overlaid in red, a DLC is overlaid in green, the data values, 6A and 6B are overlaid in blue, the CRC is the darker blue, and at the end is the acknowledge. Using the colored overlays allows the user to easily disseminate the bit values. The oscilloscope is capturing the physical layer of the signal, bringing the data into the machine. The decoders are showing the protocol layer, the hexadecimal, and in certain cases, as in CAN bus for example, they can do symbolic decoding, which is more in the application layer. To summarize, the scope captures the physical layer, and the decoders take care of the rest. The ID in this case is 400, and there are two data values in the frame, 6A and 6B. This will be discussed further in a later slide.
