Basics of Wire and Cable Slide 6

The electrical characteristics discussed to this point are often defined by a number known as dielectric constant. It is important only in terms of what it indicates about the material’s capacitance, attenuation, and the velocity of propagation. The dielectric constant of air is 1.0. Other insulation can be compared to this with a number higher than 1.0 -- the closer to 1.0, the better the performance.
