Basics of Wire and Cable Slide 21

There is a lot of air in a semi-solid cable. A solid rod of insulation is spirally wound around the conductor to ensure proper spacing is maintained between the center conductor and the tube of the insulation that is extruded over both the conductor and the spiral wound insulator. It is used mostly in coax constructions where higher performing electrical characteristics are required. However, with the increase in popularity of twisted pair cables, the use of this cable type is decreasing.
