Referring to the two plots shown on this slide, the green trace is the current as measured in the short circuit. The fault is latched if the device remains clamped for at least 1µs. This clamp time is provided to allow current to charge the varistor present in most brushed DC motors. Overcurrent is not intended to limit inrush current.
