Wi-Fi is a family of wireless networking protocols based on the IEEE 802.11 standards. It is the primary way most people access the internet, but it also allows devices within a network to share data and control other devices wirelessly. Devices such as computers, smartphones, smart appliances, wearables, and sensors use Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi has a range of use cases across industries beyond the smart home; including smart cities, automotive, healthcare, smart farming, and industrial IoT environments. Wi-Fi is one of the most cost effective and scalable wireless technologies for IoT applications.

Standards of Wi-Fi are constantly evolving, offering improved performance and features. Newer generations such as Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E provide faster speeds, higher capacity, and lower latency, while the emerging technology of Wi-Fi HaLow (802.11ah) provides longer range, lower power connectivity for many applications including sensor networks.
