Understanding and Using Current Transformers Slide 3

In the example shown, the conductor current is 1 A and there are 100 turns on the CT winding. If a 10 burden is applied to the CT winding, a current of 1/100 or 10 mA flows through the CT winding, producing a voltage of 100 mV across the burden resistor. This voltage is proportional to the conductor current and it is therefore now possible to monitor or measure any variations in the conductor current.
