Understanding and Using Current Transformers Slide 2

Conventionally a transformer is used to step down or up an input voltage in proportion to the turns ratios of the winding.  Obviously the current in each winding is also stepped up or down, but in inverse proportion to the turns ratio. In the current transformer the conductor of interest forms a single turn primary by passing it through the centre of the toroid. The winding of the current transformer then forms a secondary winding which produces a voltage across a burden resistor in proportion to the current flowing in the ‘primary’ conductor.
