The breakthrough technology enabling any-rate frequency synthesis on every output clock is Skyworks Solutions' patented MultiSynth fractional divider. The Si533x/5x has a MultiSynth divider in each output clock path (MultiSynthM1/2/3), as well as the feedback path (MultiSynthN). The MultiSynth block accepts a high frequency reference clock from the internal voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The MultiSynth divider divides down this frequency to produce the exact frequency required by the application. The frequency synthesis error is 0 ppm, therefore the device produces the exact frequency required by the application. The innovative technology behind MultiSynth is the phase error calculator and phase adjustment. The device tracks the phase difference between the divided down clock (fDIV) and the ideal clock waveform, and dynamically changes the output clock phase to match the ideal clock waveform. By accurately matching the ideal clock waveform, the Si533x/5x delivers jitter performance of 1 ps rms (random phase jitter, over 12 kHz to 20 MHz integration bandwidth).
