When designers are ready for an enhanced evaluation of the R8C Family, they can proceed with a combination of free and low-cost tools. The standard evaluation platform offered by Renesas globally is the RSK or Renesas Starter Kits. The RSKs provide full evaluation capability of specific device groups. They include a target board, on-chip debug emulator, Renesas High-Performance Embedded Workshop (HEW) with a free C Compiler, and a full suite of example projects created to demonstrate specific features of the MCU under evaluation. For the R8C, Renesas offers a free-of-charge software tool called I/O Wizard. This tool is a code generator utility which can be used for quick development of peripheral drivers, especially when users are not familiar with the R8C family. The next step in the development cycle may require advanced debugging capabilities. Renesas also offers its own line of full function in-circuit emulators. Shown in the lower-center here is the Renesas E100 ICE. This emulator has been designed to support multiple MCU architectures. The great benefit of this is that users need to invest only once on the chassis or base unit and can switch from one MCU to another by just swapping daughterboards. This also helps maintain a common hardware and interface, so users do not need to re-learn a new environment every time.
