The last example of R8C features used to increase system reliability is the power supply monitoring hardware which includes the Power-on Reset (or POR) and Low-Voltage Detection (LVD) or Brown-out circuits. The diagrams here provide a little more detail about the POR features. The R8C/3x and Lx series incorporate additional enhancements in the POR circuit, which makes them even more powerful. Such features include the capability to come out of Reset even if the supply voltage rise time is very long. This greatly simplifies the design of the power supply system which is typically required to have a minimum rise time for the MCU to operate correctly. In addition, R8C MCUs incorporate low voltage detection circuitry which allows the system to monitor fluctuations in the power supply. The LVD can be configured to detect multiple voltage levels and can generate an interrupt that notifies the CPU of any abnormality, or a system reset that prevents an undesirable operating condition.
