This diagram shows how the THM family of products can support 2xMOPP requirements and the higher level of patient protection. On the lower portion in red, the illustration reflects an AC/DC power supply with a 12V_DC output. The THM series DC/DC part is shown with a 12V_DC input and 5V_DC output that is delivering power to the Applied Part portion of the device. With the characteristics previously discussed on the THM series, the Applied Part now has 2xMOPP protection for the patient. Often times the Applied Part will require a <30 Watt low power solution and a different voltage than the main system voltage. Using the THM series DC/DC converters offers additional design flexibility to support the Applied Part requirement of 2xMOPP. Developed and honed over a long period, TRACO’s unique approach ensures the required separation and isolation, while achieving sufficient coupling to allow the DC/DC converter to operate efficiently. A low coupling capacitance between the primary and secondary transformer windings is an important aspect of the protection implementation. Values as low as 10-15 picofarads ensure that there is negligible transfer of current across the isolation barrier, providing patient protection in line with the requirements of the IEC-60601.
