The equation shown here represents the inductance of an air coil. By winding the conductor into a coil shape, the magnetic field generated is greatly intensified and behaves in a manner similar to that of the magnetic field of a permanent bar magnet. The permeability of free space is a known value and is used only when calculating the inductance of an air coil.
