AC Switches Family - Part 2 Slide 15

This slide presents a brief summary of what it means to have a partnership with ST. In appliances, typically each load has a dedicated switch. Sometimes the switch may be a relay; Triacs can be used to replace relays in AC switch applications, provided the switched current is not too high. There is a difference between a Triac and a relay contact; the Triac dissipates more power, so in lower current applications it is feasible to replace relays with AC switches. Thanks to high junction temperature devices smaller heatsinks are possible; therefore a smaller system size. Additionally, it is possible to monitor the AC switch with a diagnostic device like the STCC08.  Plus due to the reduced maintenance of appliances where AC switches are used, such as the ACS because of its robustness, the reliability and warranty claims will be very low. There are also surface mount alternatives available from STMicroelectronics, which has one of the largest Triac production facilities in the world. Finally, a selection guide is available for all of these devices.
