PLCA vs. CSMA/CD: 8 Nodes, 64 Bytes Payload Image of onsemi's PLCA vs CSMA/CD Networks

Looking at the plot here on the left, the PLCA network throughput is flat at just under 10 Mbit/s no matter if there are two transmitting nodes or eight transmitting nodes. In contrast, the CSMA-CD network throughput degrades as the number of transmitting nodes increases above 1. Looking at the plot on the right, the PLCA average access latency typically ranges from 300 µs to 500 µs. In contrast, the CSMA-CD access latency average typically ranges from 30 ms to 60 ms. A faster access latency is better than a slower access latency. So, overall, the physical layer collision avoidance is a superior collision detection scheme vs. carrier sense multiple access/collision detection (CSMA-CD).
