Safe operating area is the power handing capability of a power transistor over voltage and current conditions. Alternatively, it is also a measure of the power transistor’s robustness or ruggedness in how much power it can handle without requiring current limit to be decreased. A wider safe operating area means that the power transistor can output higher current at high VIN-VOUT conditions. It has less current limit foldback.
