onsemi eFuses like the NIS3071 are an ideal replacement for traditional protection solutions such as slow-blow fuses, PPTCs, blade fuses, and fuses with mechanical relay combinations to name a few. The eFuse provides a notable improvement to performance for several reasons. The typical PCB area consumed by relays and fuses is on the order of 300mm² or more, while eFuses like the NIS3071 available in a 5mm by 6mm package consume only 30mm². The weight of components needed to implement similar protection functionality with traditional means is usually greater than 5 grams, while eFuses are less than 1 gram. eFuses have very fast fault response times near 6 microseconds compared to 1 second with standard fuses and relays. eFuses are also smarter devices including diagnostic capability and software compatibility. Lastly, eFuses are quickly resettable for many overcurrent events, while standard fuses are typically one time use. PPTCs are a traditional fuse that offer resettable functionality when paired with an appropriate controller but take time to return to normal operation.
