esr ripple
When large amounts of AC current are flowing through a capacitor, I²R losses can cause excessive power dissipation and considerable heating. The result can be catastrophic failure of the component or damage to neighboring components. By utilizing C0G technology, ESR is reduced dramatically which results in low power dissipation and very little heating. For example, the table here shows a 1 W power dissipation at 3 A for a class 2 X7R capacitor with an ESR of 110 mΩ at 100 kHz. The corresponding temperature rise is 50°C above room temperature. The KEMET KPS-MCC capacitor under the same conditions shows an ESR of only 1 mΩ and a total power dissipation of only 9 mW. With such low power dissipation, temperature rise is less than 2°C above room temperature. Reducing the self heating of the capacitor results in increased performance and reliability.
