In summary, there are three main types of cable which include multiconductor, multipair, and coaxial. Each cable type can be constructed from different materials for specific applications. Conductors can be made of aluminum, copper, or copper-covered steel. Conductor size is determined by the AWG system and they can be solid or stranded wire. The shielding can be one of four types: braided, spiral, foil, or foil/braid combination. Finally, the insulators can be polyethylene (PE), PVC, or rubber.
