Compared to a mouse, an encoder is mounted on the front panel of the application. This results in a self contained assembly that does not require additional space or surfaces for a mouse pad. Compared to joysticks, encoders provide a reliable performance and functionality for mid tier cost applications. Joysticks are generally of the high volume, low cost variety (used in consumer electronics) or are very high cost precision devices used in avionics and other critical applications. Compared to potentiometers, optical encoders output digital signals that are more compatible with today’s digital devices vs. the analog output of a potentiometer.
