For any application, you have a variety of input devices to choose from. It is important to understand how optical encoders compare to other types of input solutions the customer may be considering. Compared to keypads, optical encoders require less panel space. In addition, operators do not have to look directly at the encoder while scrolling through or inputting data. Compared to trackballs, Optical encoders allow incorporation of “push to enter” pushbutton functionality. Optical encoders resist collecting dust and are therefore lower maintenance than trackballs. Compared to rotary switches, optical encoders have a much greater rated life. Encoders are rated for 1,000,000 cycles or more. Rotary switches are rated for 25,000 to 50,000 cycles. Also, optical encoders output digital signals that are more compatible with today’s digital devices.
