ACS710-Slide6

In high-side applications that require voltage isolation the ACS710 device offers advantages relative to current transformers. The figure in this slide shows the SOIC16 package next to a typical current transformer drawn at the same scale. Additionally, the figure depicts a sense resistor and op-amp configuration often employed in low-side current sensing applications. The SOIC16 package offers a significant space saving advantage, and is clearly a designer-preferred solution in applications that are space-limited. The Allegro SOIC16 wide body package offers other significant advantages. The wide body SOIC16 package provides 7.25 mm clearance and 7.5 mm distance between the primary current path and secondary signal pins, allowing use of this sensor in high-side applications that require galvanic isolation. Cutting a slit in the PCB, between the signal leads and primary current path, further improves the clearance distance and is a common practice for high-isolation applications. The ACS710 is suitable for use in high isolation voltage applications. The ACS710 is UL1577 certified to a single protection isolation voltage of 3000 VRMS and a 277 VRMS working voltage, making the ACS710 suitable for line-powered applications. Additionally, whereas the accuracy of sense resistor and op-amp based current sensor solutions is heavily influenced by changes in the resistor value over temperature, the ACS710 output error is in no way influenced by the resistance of its primary conductor.
