ACS710-Slide5

The primary conductor that passes in and out of the SOIC16 package has a typical resistance of 1 mOhm, which results in very low power dissipation. ACS710 power dissipation is approximately five to ten times lower than typical sense resistor solutions that require a 5 to 10 mOhm sense resistor to maintain system accuracy. For shunt resistor solutions, the voltage across the sense resistor must be large enough to maintain system accuracy in the presence of amplifier input offset – thereby forcing system designers to use larger resistor values than desired. ACS710 power savings are significant in applications where the current sensor can be active over a long period of time (for example in servers, power supplies, or residential and industrial power measurement devices). With proper PCB copper thickness and layout techniques, the SOIC16 current sensor package can easily withstand a 40A continuous current even at elevated ambient temperatures, as high as 85°C. Please see the Allegro website and ACS710 datasheet for information related to PCB layout techniques and package thermal power dissipation.
