Remote Control Infrared Receivers Slide 2

IR Receivers are primarily used to control consumer electronic devices like televisions, DVR’s, notebook PC’s and sound systems. They are also used as long range sensors in light barrier and safety applications like garage door closure cut-off switches. The basic premise at work in an IR remote control is the use of infrared light to carry data signals between a remote control and the receiving device. The infrared light is generated by an LED which has a peak wavelength of approximately 940nm. The IR transmitter pulses the LED to generate infrared light signals which represent specific binary commands, such as power On or volume up.
