skywire cellular modem
Skywire is a end-device certified cellular modem; no further ODI certification is required on the Verizon network. The Skywire modem uses the XBEE form factor which is familiar to wireless developers and allows changing the Skywire to fit the application. The Skywire has level shifting onboard, so developers can use a wide variety of I/O voltage levels. It only needs a simple serial port or USB connection for data and includes U.FL antenna connectors to make connecting an antenna easy. The chart on the lower right is something Airgain uses to help customers that are not familiar with cellular. This chart walks them through the technology, carriers and certifications required to put a device on a cellular network. All devices must be certified by one of the certification bodies to be allowed on the cellular network. There are significant time and monetary costs associated with getting a product certified. Certification of an end-device can take six months and $50k if designers pass the first time and know how to keep the process moving forward. Clearly there are big advantages to using a certified modem to get started. The chart then shows the alphabet soup of cellular, helping customers understand where the various acronyms fit into the cellular puzzle and what technology best fits their application.
