Now that the argument for using cellular has been made, there are two ways to go about it. One way is for mature designs with high volumes (10k and up). This method is to design a cellular module down on a board. This will require designers to go through FCC and Carrier certifications for their end device. The reason Airgain says mature designs and high volumes is that the Carrier certification process can take six months or more and tens of thousands of dollars to complete ($50k+ for LTE). After the device is approved, every time a change is made to the design, the designer will be forced to resubmit the design for review and possibly for more expensive testing. The second option for cellular design is to use a certified modem – like the Skywire end-device certified modem from Airgain. The Skywire modem has gone through the FCC and ODI (Verizon) certification process, so designers can plug one into their design today, and put that device on the network. If they change the design, no problem, the certification is for the modem, so they do not need to do anything. The Skywire modem uses the XBee form factor, allowing developers to use any of the versions both in the US and around the World – all from the same board design. This design also allows them to futureproof their design, offering an upgrade path to the newest technology from the carriers and cellular chipset manufacturers. Airgain provides development kits, design files, and software examples to make it as easy as possible for users to get started on their project. Airgain has expanded their product line to include the E2C Link – a simple Ethernet to cellular device that is seeing great adoption in installed devices with Ethernet ports. ATMs, Kiosks, PLCs - any legacy system that has data stuck in it for lack of a network connection can be connected with an E2C Link. Airgain will also help customers designing the Skywire modem into a device. They can leverage the many designs they have done to customize a solution for a device. If designers need assistance with choosing a carrier or platform, they have multiple partnerships to assist in the decision making process.
