Another way to see the impact of the tunable loop is to view the voltage deviation vs. the external capacitance for an untuned module (in red) and a tuned module (in green). Adding more capacitance to an untuned module results in poorer phase margin until the solution is no longer viable due to instability. The tunable loop can be use in a number of different ways. If the intent is to improve performance, the tunable loop offers 2x the deviation improvement with the same external capacitance. If the intent is to reduce capacitance, the tunable loop offers 3x the capacitance reduction for the same deviation.
