QorIQ T4240 Processor Learn and Earn Slide 3

The T4240 processor is based on the new Power Architecture e6500 core. The e6500 uses a seven-stage pipeline for low latency response to unpredictable code execution paths, boosting single threaded performance. The e6500’s fully resourced dual threads provide 1.7 times the performance of a single thread. With an improved core architecture that yields 6.0 DMIPS/MHz, at 1.8GHz per core this equates to 129600 DMIPS of performance. T4240 offers 4x the performance of NXP’s previous flagship, P4080 processor. Using 28 nm process technology and a cascading power management system, the T4240 processor is 1.4 to 3 times more power efficient than the nearest competition. In addition, T4240 and T4160 processors support advanced power saving modes including state retention power gating. Lastly, the T4240/T4160 processors include a hardware-based hypervisor, which enables each core to run its own operating system completely independent of the other cores. The hypervisor facilitates resource sharing and partitioning in a dual-core environment and provides protection in the event that one core, driven by malicious or improperly programmed code, tries to access an area it does not have permission to read or write. It also allows the sharing and partitioning of various I/Os across both cores and ensures that incoming memory mapped transitions are written only into appropriate ranges of the memory map.
