In idle conditions when there is no sound being generated, the conventional class D amplifiers are running at 50% duty cycle which is still generating switching losses on the MOSFETs and core losses in the inductor. A multi-level class D amplifier, however, has almost no switching activilities in the power stage and filtering circuits in idle state, hence has tremendously reduced idle power consumptions.
