Optoisolators Slide 4

The circuitry to the left shows an LED that transmits light through the light channel whenever a current passes through the input side. In the circuitry to the right, the light that is received on the output side triggers a current through the phototransistor or the Photologic® device, completing the transmission of information. The optoisolator allows power sources on both sides to be electrically isolated while transmitting information.
