Honeywell’s SMART Position Sensor, Rotary Configuration, utilizes non-contact MR technology to determine the object’s position. This allows the device to accurately sense position in dirty, harsh environments, making it highly durable. Honeywell developed this sensor to have the high level of accuracy needed for applications in which it is intended to operate. Optical encoders always have some actuation fit, unlike SMART rotary which is truly non-contact. Because they utilize light to determine position, optical encoders are often affected by dirt, fog, and especially moisture, reducing durability. How does Honeywell’s SMART Position Sensor, Rotary Configuration, compare with the use of resolvers? Resolvers are hand-wired devices with extremely high accuracy and durability often used in incredibly precise, non-serviceable aerospace applications. While resolvers are durable, they are more expensive than Honeywell’s SMART Position Sensor. Additionally, resolvers often require hands-on integration and knowledge of control systems to integrate.
