An important characteristic of an optical encoder is its resolution. Resolution is specified in pulses per revolution or cycles per revolution depending on the manufacturer. For example: encoders with PPRs in the 4-32 range are referred to as “low resolution encoders”. Encoders with PPRs of 100 or more are generally known as high resolution encoders.
