KiCad 9.0 – Getting Started Part 6: Laying Out Your First PCB | DigiKey

In Episode 6 of our KiCad series, we finally jump into the PCB layout phase! Building on the schematic and footprint work done in earlier episodes, this tutorial walks you through opening the PCB Editor, setting up manufacturing constraints, arranging footprints, and routing your first traces. You’ll learn how to: • Open the PCB Editor from either the Project Manager or Schematic Editor • Set your design rules to match PCB manufacturing specs (using DKRed from DigiKey as an example) • Update your layout with assigned footprints and clean up initial placement • Use tools like ratnest toggles, cross-probing, and layer visibility • Fix footprint mismatches (like the DC jack’s extra pad) • Move and align components using smart grid settings and shortcut keys • Add mounting holes using reset local coordinates for perfect placement • Define board outlines using Edge.Cuts and add fillets for smoother corners • Route traces with tips for dragging, grabbing, flipping, and highlighting nets • Use Vias to switch layers mid-route • Optimize trace width and learn how to edit nets in bulk • Create copper pours (zones) for Ground (GND) and Power (Vcc) connections • Use the 3D viewer to inspect your design and fix missing models (like using .STEP instead of .WRL files) • Modify footprints for better hand soldering (TO-92 handsolder version) • Add optional features like a power-on LED circuit by updating the schematic properly • Run a Design Rule Check (DRC) to confirm there are no errors • Preview the finished board in 3D with custom colors (DKRed preset!) Along the way, you’ll also discover shortcuts and pro tips that save time and improve the quality of your layout. From setting up your copper pour to learning how thermal reliefs work for soldering, this episode prepares you to create a fully functional, manufacturable PCB. Stay tuned for Episode 7, where we’ll: • Add a custom graphic • Generate Gerber files and preview them • Build a BOM (Bill of Materials) • Prepare everything you need to order your boards and parts!
