The dual H-bridge section consists of 8 N-channel DMOS transistors offering efficient low RDS(ON) power switches for low voltage/power loss. External flyback and ground clamp diodes are not required as the DMOS transistors have integrated body diodes and the A3987 has a synchronous rectification feature which turns on the proper transistor to allow current flow through the more efficient DMOS transistor Vs. the less efficient integrated body diode during the fixed off time period of current recirculation. The ancillary section provides the charge pump, internal voltage regulators, gate drive, and output transistor over-current/short circuit protection to ensure proper A3987 operation.
