There can be nothing worse than having download and install both Arduino.cc and Arduino.org IDE’s to your computer, then get all confused on which one to launch because they both have the same logo, name and brand. Well, much to my delight and thousands of other Arduino users Arduino (both) have released a new IDE which supports ALL Arduino boards from both companies, yay!

Actually, this news comes of no surprise. During the World Maker Faire in 2016, both Arduino’s revealed that the companies would merge back together, just like the good old days. Although the latest Arduino IDE 1.8.1 is just a small stepping stone in the merge, it is a huge leap forward for many Arduino users and the growing community.

The new Arduino IDE works out of the box and retains all the popular features previously known. It works with all AVR boards such as the Uno, Mega, YUN and Micro, amongst other popular boards. Additionally, it now supports the Leonardo Ethernet, YUN mini, Industrial 101 and the latest Uno Wi-Fi which is based on the ESP IC. You can check out all the Arduino IDE revision changes on their log.

Arduino has also given updates to the SAMD core and the NRF52 core that supports the M0 and M0 Pro, which are featured on the latest MKR Zero and Primo.

It’s great to see that Arduino is still actively developing the IDE even though they have stated in the past that the future of the IDE lays away from the Desktop version and more towards the web. Whilst this sounds great, the web has its limitations, the compilation is done on the user side therefore is reliant on the latest software such as web browser and Javascript.

Hopefully this is the start of many great things to come from the Arduino merger and only the makers will greatly benefit from this. You can download the latest IDE from both Arduino.cc and Arduino.org .
