Its system architecture is designed to ensure high robustness and reliability in digital I/O applications such as factory automation and functional safety in challenging industrial environments. The board can be plugged in on top of an STM32 Nucleo board through its ST morpho extension headers.

The microcontroller pins and peripherals designated for the operation of the STEVAL-FSM01M1 are physically separated from any other X-NUCLEO boards connected to the system. Additional expansion shields can be easily added to the top of the stack to extend system functionality. The associated STM32 firmware package, STSW-FSM01, is compatible with NUCLEO-F401RE and can be easily adapted to run on other STM32 Nucleo platforms.
