Raspberry Pi Foundation sells its 10 Millionth Board since 2012

The Raspberry Pi computer, the size of a credit card, was first released into the world in 2012 and sold 100,000 units on its first day of launch. Today it is widely used as an educational tool to teach young people of how to program in the real-world. Their goal was simple, “to increase the number of people applying to study computer science” by putting a cheap, programmable computer in the hands of thousands of students. Essentially the Raspberry Pi aimed to replicate the excitement and buzz around computers way back in the 80’s where we had the likes of the Sinclair Spectrum, BBC Micro and Commodore 64.

The Raspberry Pi foundation has successfully delivered just that and more. Not only is the Raspberry Pi used in the education sector but also in the Maker and Media channels, with users creating some weird and wonderful things, including a trip in space!

In four and half years, we have seen the company expand its flavours of Raspberry with the first Raspberry Pi 1 Model B up to the latest and greatest Raspberry Pi 3, with other variations also for different applications.

To celebrate its milestone, the Raspberry Pi foundation has launched a Raspberry Pi Starter kit, in which they describe it as “the perfect bundle”. The official Raspberry Pi Starter Kit includes the following; Raspberry Pi 3, 8 GB SD card with NOOBs OS, Official Case, 2.5A PSU, 1 meter HDMI cable and official USB mouse and keyboard.

During the launch, CEO Eben Upton also stated that there will be no new hardware on the horizon for the next few years with the Raspberry Pi 3 being the flagship model and the Raspberry Pi Zero also being the cheapest model at $5. However, there will be a number of software updates over the coming months, creating a better user experience overall.
