overview

Current sense transformers are designed to measure current, but in reality they are used to provide a voltage that is proportional to the current of interest. This voltage can then be fed into a microprocessor for measuring or detecting an on/off condition. Current shunts can also be used to measure current, but due to their resistance they can create excessive losses compared to current sense transformers in similar high current applications.
