Wireless Power Standards Slide 2
There are 4 types of Wireless power methods employed in the industry today, Electromagnetic Induction, Magnetic Resonance, Capacitive Coupling, and Radio Wave. The first two, have Industry Standardizations from both the WPC and AirFuel Groups. Qi is the WPC standards for both power methods, while AirFuel is called Power Matters Alliance (PMA) in Induction and Rezence in Resonance type. The benefits of Induction method are that it has a simple architecture to make it compact, while offering low cost and high efficiency at the same time. The downside is that the distance between the Rx/Tx for power is limited to centimeters range. Resonance allows greater working distances between the Rx/Tx, at the cost of power efficiency. Capacitive Couple and Radio Wave currently do not have industry standardization groups around them and are much more complex in their designs.
