Thermistor-Overview

A PTC Thermistor (POSISTOR®) can be used as a resettable over-current protection device. It has a constant resistance value at room temperature, where it operates likes a linear resistor. When an over-current event occurs, its temperature increases by internal heating, resulting in a very rapid increase in its resistance which shuts off the current flow. This current limiting protection occurs in several hundreds of milliseconds. Once the current through the POSISTOR returns to normal, it cools down and its original resistance is restored. Due to this behavior, the POSISTOR is a very effective resettable current fuse.
