When a current carrying conductor or a semiconductor plate is placed into a magnetic field, a voltage (Vhall) is generated perpendicular to both the current and the field.  This is the Hall-effect principle, discovered in 1879 by Edwin Hall, and commercialized in the mid-1960s.
