Vybronics' LRAs can rise 10x faster and fall up to 2x faster than standard coin-type ERMs

Image of Vybronics Rectangular LRA Vibration MotorThis series of Vybronics' linear resonant actuators (LRA) generate vibration/haptic feedback in the plane parallel to the motor's largest surface versus a coin-type LRA whose G force is perpendicular to the face of the motor.

To generate crisp haptic feedback, fast rise and fall times are critical. Rise times up to 10 times faster and fall times up to 2 times faster than standard coin-type eccentric rotating mass (ERM) vibration motors can be realized with a Vybronics LRA. The LRA’s simple internal construction offers high reliability and exceptionally long life compared to brush ERM coin vibration motors. For optimal performance, these LRA devices should be driven with an AC signal at its resonant frequency. This AC drive signal can be generated by using LRA driver ICs made by companies such as TI and Renesas. Development boards are available from these two companies. These boards connect to a PC and include the driver IC, peripheral components, and software GUI used to set the parameters of the driver IC. Poron foam pads of varying thicknesses, custom FPCs, and lead wire lengths are available.

The VL91022-160-320H has a unique internal structure that produces vibration energy in either the Y (320 Hz) or Z (160 Hz) plane or multiple planes when driven with a complex waveform. This device was developed for gaming consoles but may be used in other applications.

Not all LRAs are narrow bandwidth/HI-Q devices. For example, the VLV152564W has a resonant frequency of 80 Hz but is usable in the audio frequency range. This particular model has been successfully used as a bone conduction transducer. Please consult the frequency response curves in the data sheets to explore a device’s usable bandwidth.
