STMicroelectronics' STISO621 digital isolator is the first one of its ST product family. Digital isolators are IC devices that enable the transferring of digital signals across a galvanic isolation barrier. Typically, digital isolators are characterized by key performance indicators. These indicators identify the capacity of the device to transfer the digital signal between the two sides of devices working in the two different isolated domains and the key performance indicators which identify the performance of the galvanic isolation barrier.
STISO621 has two channels; i.e., it can transfer in parallel two digital lines over the galvanic isolation barrier. One line goes from the low voltage domain to the high voltage domain direction of the device; the second line goes in the reverse direction. STISO621 is one of the first ST products to embed the latest thick oxide 6 kV galvanic isolation technology.
STISO621 is offered in two package options: SO8 wide body (p/n STISO621W) and SO8 narrow body (p/n STISO621). Respectively, STISO621W and STISO621 provide 8 mm and 4 mm creepage and clearance values and 6000 VPEAK and 4800 VPEAK impulse withstand voltage (VIOTM). Both part numbers support a high rate of maximum working isolation voltage (VIOWM=849 VRMS).
The two independent channels in the opposite direction of STISO621 devices (forward and reverse channels) are equipped with Schmitt trigger input, providing robustness to noise and very high speed (100 Mbps) input/output switching time with an exceptionally low pulse distortion (<3 ns). The high-level performance, both in terms of galvanic isolation and signal switching capabilities, make STISO621 suitable for isolated UART interfaces in industrial applications such as grids, electricity meters, motor drives, factory automation, building automation, lighting, and appliances, and replacements for optocouplers, which suffer from well-known aging performance degradation.
