This high-voltage isolation pairs with a very high insulation resistance up to 1013 Ω and operates in less than 10 µsec and creepage distances from input to output in the range from 12.7 mm to 35 mm.

Optocouplers essentially operate in all kinds of extremely hazardous, explosive, moist, or dirty environments, as well as in reliable medical equipment over a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. They draw no potentially hazardous arc by transferring their digital or analog signal information from input to output. Engineered with no moving parts, optocouplers operate safely for billions of operations without interference from magnetic fields. If the internal LED is used with <50% of the nominal current, then the lifetime of the optocoupler can increase by a factor of 10. Furthermore, they can operate or transfer information at a 50 kHz rate. Compared with relays, optocouplers experience only negligible output delay times.

Typical applications include any potentially hazardous locations or explosive atmospheres where combustion or ignition is a safety concern, such as any spark-resistant tools, portable electrical and lighting products, or other battery-operated devices used in electric and electronic circuitry. Mining operations, chemical processing plants, and some medical processing plants are just a few examples.
